A bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies is a great program that lets you to experience two different areas of studies.  Usually a student would pick a major and direct oneself to the specific area being narrowed to just one subject and one understanding of what is right and wrong. While this program lets you incorporate two different areas of study. So if one is discussing whether to study Business or Communication this program is a solution, because it gives you a possibility to study both and broaden your mind greatly. Taking this program truly expands ones possibilities of employment after graduating because the two areas make availability of careers very broad.

As my two concentration areas I picked Russian and Spanish languages. I wanted to major in Spanish, but also had Russian in mind, as both languages sound very important to me. So when I heard that there is such a program I understood that this is exactly what I need and therefore I chose it. And I am very happy I did, because it let me expand my skills of both languages.

BIS Classes

Taking BIS 301: Foundations of Interdisciplinary Studies and BIS 302: Interdisciplinary Inquiry classes really helped me to learn and understand how I will be incorporating these to concentration areas together. The projects we had during the classes made us thing about possibilities, problems and solutions when applying the two areas together and finding right places to be.

BIS 401/RUS 484 - internship/independent study was probably the most interesting experience. I did my internship with a Russian professor about the Russian colony in Mexico and so traveling there and finding out how two cultures so far apart got so close was just fascinating. When I did my Internship with one of my professors I have learned about a Russian colony in Mexico. Religious group called Molokans that came to Mexico looking for a place to practice their religion and just be free from persecution. When I took a trip to discover their village I got to use my languages and learn how two cultures can come together so easily. It was a great experience and I believe it will help me in my career, as now I understand how cultures interfere.

BIS 402- Senior Seminar at the same time helped me understand who I am. We studied different archetypes and found out which ones are the strongest ones in us and also tried to awaken the weakest one as well. It was a wonderful class because it made me think of where I am in life, what mistakes I make and what I could be doing differently. Today I see that understanding all that really changed me and I can only thank my professor for having such a great class because this will make me stronger when I am ready to step up in life.
